Solid Wood Construction

We at Maurice’s strive for functional elegance. Our suppliers provide us with only premium woods from the Northern regions of the U.S. where it grows slowly for consistent wood texture. In our manufacturing facility we follow century old construction techniques developed for working with solid wood. Our lumber is kiln dried 7% to 8%, to ensure the least amount of expansion and contraction. This standard is developed to minimize problems for a solid wood product in the most common settings in a home with national average humidity.

We pride our selves in building our furniture out of solid wood. However, real wood has several traits that make it difficult to work with; because it shrinks and expands with temperature changes, wood grain & color varies from one board to the next and, it could warp if not properly handled. Nevertheless, we prefer working with “real wood” verses Formica, particle board or plywood; these materials are mostly associated with mass produced furniture with a style that is far from the antique, distressed look that makes our product more charming.
Keeping in mind the above-mentioned characteristics of real wood, we build all exposed furniture parts such as doors and sidewalls with “floating” panels; these panels can expand and contract freely within their frames. All our drawers feature dove tail construction and our cabinet frames are put together using mortise and tenon joinery.
We hand hewn and distress all our wood; this technique produces shatter marks and an irregular wood surface giving our product the beautiful antique appearance. Finally, as a finishing touch, you can select from a multitude of finishes. Whether it is waxed, stained, painted distressed, crackled or varnished with glaze, all our finishes ultimately create the “Olde World “appearance that our company is known for.
